Afro-American Newspapers Archives
About:
The Afro-American Newspapers Archives (aka AFRO Archives) document over 130 years of AFRO history in the form of company business records and artifacts, personal papers of members of the Murphy family who have run the company since 1897, and the AFRO Morgue Files, a production archive and internal reference file documenting subjects covered in the paper.
Afro Charities is a 501(c)3 organization that maintains and cares for the AFRO Archives, hosts programs with local partners, and provides meaningful opportunities for our community to engage with and contribute to the archives. Since 2019, Afro Charities, Inc. serves as the steward of the AFRO Archives.
The archives is currently hosted by the Maryland State Archives while the redevelopment of the archives' new home in West Baltimore, the Martha E. Murphy Research Institute at Upton Mansion, is underway. Afro Charities staff provide remote research services for people wishing to access the archives in the meantime.
